Drums and Rattles Show - Stonington Gallery, Seattle

I just painted this drum for the "Drums and Rattles" group show that will be at the Stonington Gallery in Seattle, Washington.  It opens April 8th http://www.stoningtongallery.com/upcoming.php

I think I will do a few more drums in the future.  Enjoyable to make and painting is a nice departure from my normal work.   The drum above is based on some old Plains Indian shield paintings.  There are several in historic collections with the buffalo feet symbols in the four directions.   So this I have named the "Buffalo Caller" drum, in honor of those who sang honor songs to the buffalo before the hunt, to call them near so they could proved substance for the tribes.

This is a drum I painted a few years ago to tell the story of a bear attack that happened in the forest I happen to run and ride my horses in.  A friend of mine was mauled while out mountain bike riding and barely survived the attack. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003888882_webbearattack17m.html  But I am proud to say, he has not only fought back physically (he almost lost his arm, had his ear torn off, and had numerous bite and claw wounds over his body) but what makes me very proud of my friend is that he also has not let this attack stop him from enjoying riding his mountain bike in the very forest he was attacked in.  This takes a very strong mental and emotional commitment.  He decided he was not a victim.
The Banner Forest Bear was never found either, although a lengthy search by Wildlife officials was mounted.   So somewhere in the forest I visit and love, this bear is there, either physically or his spirit is there.   I wanted to honor that.
