CROW STYLE TIPI BAGS

This is a pair of tipi bags I have made in the past as well as a few singles.  Usually tipi bags are made in pairs, to be hung one on each side of the horse when used for transporting camp, and then hung from the top of the liner in the tipi (hence the name) or placed along the bottom as the photos show.  But often over time they end up separated, so I chose also to make to singles ones.  These bags are all "Crow" style bags.  Many different tribes made these with each one having its different tribal nuances to it.  Nomadic people need a way to store and carry their possessions, and these were a perfect canvas to express tribal styles and preferences artistically while still being practical.

Both the pair and the two singles are made using brain tanned hide (the smoke tanned one is recycled from a old buffalo robe) and antique beads, sinew sewn. The center "targets" on the pair are also recycled from a cloth war shirt.   Having to work hard to tan hides and procure expensive beads, recycling is nothing new to natives. Many items are made reusing beadwork or hide that once was something else.
